Also, I am now thinking, I should not discount all of the good police officers that I knew personally as a grade schooler. Those guys always took time to come to school, gently scare us with statistics, listen to us being broken records... all while maintaining a friendly but official fatherly facade. Officer Friendly (apparently his real name) was a real peach. And that guy with a mustache and a less memorable name was always special to me as well. I never became a druggie, possibly because of them.

Oh come on, do you really think his last name was ACTUALLY Friendly? I can see believing it as a grade schooler, but surely in retrospect. . . . Anyway, about police officers, I have a particularly bad opinion of the one who tried to extremely scare us in high school with gruesome pictures of grizzly drunk-driving accident scene photos. I still resent that. It was like an R-rated movie, and I was only 15.
Are you saying that I'm as gullible as a grade schooler?
And I agree: I think these scare tactics really miss their target audience, serving rather to disturb the sensitive and the conscientious, who really don't need additional scaring.
